iPod Touch Accessories and Cases
“There is a specter coming” I’m pretty sure that’s a quote from a letter from the Pope referring to Marx and Communism, but I am going to use it in reference to the iPod Touch, which will likely hit with a whirlwind force only rivaled in the technology market by the iPhone, and some gaming systems. The iPhone has sold over a million units since its June 29th release; I can only imagine how many units a device that is just like it, but without the need for a service contract and moreover is $200 cheaper for twice the capacity will sell.

Thankfully Apple has become far less stingy about licensing the Made For iPod stamp, which has allowed for a lot of accessories to be manufactured, a lot of them the same with slight feature changes and varying price ranges. So since most of the accessories made for previous iterations of the iPod will work with the iPod Touch and, if you’re upgrading, you should be set for most of your accessory needs; the only things that will really change are screen covers and cases. There will of course be several new accessories that are released to better utilize the new features the iPod Touch has, and others will just be released because they are themed after the iPod Touch, or maybe they fit better with it; regardless, you can expect there to be no shortage of iPod Touch accessories.
When it comes to cases though, it starts to get complicated. Since the iPhone shares all the same dimensions except for thickness, some iPhone cases will still work with the iPod Touch. However, others will not. There is also the long line of cases that will be released specifically for the iPod Touch. There will probably be 3 tiers of pricing for cases. There will be the low-end crap ones that are cheap, but get the job of covering the iPod Touch done, and that’s about it. Then there will be the mid-range which will add features such as belt clips, cord wraps, and who knows what else. This range will also include regular cases that just look nicer, are made better, and probably offer better protection for your precious iPod Touch. The third range will probably be from already high-end fashion companies willing to cash in on the attractiveness of this new iPod. Such designers as Prada, Fendi, Gucci,
and Louis Vuitton will probably be using their signature logos and materials to make cases for the Touch; everyone likes the guy that walks in with a $400 iPod covered in a near equal priced LV case.
Other than that, you can expect to find a slew of new backup power sources, battery extenders, FM transmitters, and docks for an assortment of functionality. My biggest hope is that someone will be able to capitalize on the wide range of functionality of the Touch so that you’ll be able to browse your iPod’s library and order new music or movies for it, using a remote and your TV screen while docked with your home theater. That way you could rent or purchase movies and videos without leaving the comfort of your couch, and without having to buy an Apple TV.
