“There is a specter coming” I’m pretty sure that’s a quote from a letter from the Pope referring to Marx and Communism, but I am going to use it in reference to the iPod Touch, which will likely hit with a whirlwind force only rivaled in the technology market by the iPhone, and some gaming systems. The iPhone has sold over a million units since its June 29th release; I can only imagine how many units a device that is just like it, but without the need for a service contract and moreover is $200 cheaper for twice the capacity will sell.

Thankfully Apple has become far less stingy about licensing the Made For iPod stamp, which has allowed for a lot of accessories to be manufactured, a lot of them the same with slight feature changes and varying price ranges. So since most of the accessories made for previous iterations of the iPod will work with the iPod Touch and, if you’re upgrading, you should be set for most of your accessory needs; the only things that will really change are screen covers and cases. There will of course be several new accessories that are released to better utilize the new features the iPod Touch has, and others will just be released because they are themed after the iPod Touch, or maybe they fit better with it; regardless, you can expect there to be no shortage of iPod Touch accessories.

Apple’s latest iPod, the iPod Touch, or TouchPod (yes, I saw that somewhere) is slowly trickling out into the public with its impending official release date of September 28th. With this release comes another device from the Apple stable that relies on a 3.5” glass screen. Granted, it is supposed to have “medical grade” glass to help keep it from getting scratched and so on, but when it comes to glass, you really can’t ever be too safe.
So, you are probably first going to be looking for a solution to protect your iPod Touch’s screen, a screen protector if you will. There are already several companies – with more undoubtedly on the way - selling these, generally made from some sort of flexible transparent, scratch resistant material; they have either a weak adhesive or rely on static cling on one side to cover your iPod Touch’s screen.

Despite similarities to the iPhone, the iPod Touch is a new device and so I’m going to point out some of its finer points. Starting with the hardware, and then moving to the software.
The Touch’s physical dimensions are impressively small. Really, the only difference between the Touch and the iPhone is the thickness. The iPod Touch’s dimensions are 4.3×2.4 inches with an anorexic 8mm thickness, or .31 inches, compared to 11.6mm for the iPhone.
In the box you can expect to find the iPod Touch, earbuds, USB cable, dock adapter, a screen polishing cloth, quick start guide and a stand for the Touch.
The capacities are 8 and 16 gigabytes; that translates into the following storage capacities: 1750/3500 songs, 10/20 thousand pictures, or 10/20 hours of video. The iPod Touch will also be able to function as a USB storage device, which is great for those that can use it for school or work, or maybe just as a spot to store your PC backup.

The biggest differences I noticed with the iPod Touch were the lack of a speaker/mic, the color of the back, and the obvious fact that its thinner.

The video of the unboxing is after the jump. Sorry about the gaffe with the release date in the video (I said it will be released on the 23rd, but it won’t be released until the 28th).
